10 ways to feed your soul

Staying connected to your soul has proven to make you happier. It fills your heart with positive and happy feelings.

What have you done lately to feed your soul? Can't remember? Here are a few ideas to get you going...

1. Daily gratitude exercises

Make a habit out of writing down 5 things you are grateful for each morning. Life can sometimes get overwhelming and we can easily lose ourselves in the things that we don't like about our life. Taking a step back and looking at the things you are grateful for each day is a great exercise. It feeds the soul, decreases your stress levels and it's also really fun to do.

2. Be present

Living fully in the present will fill your heart with positive feelings and you'll instantly be in a good mood. Listen to the birds chirp, hear the wind whistle and notice the leaves on the trees. Paying attention to the small things around you will distract you from your negative thoughts and you'll realise that this moment is the only moment that truly matters.

3. Look at the stars

Looking at the stars - or the sky - always makes us remember how small we actually are. The universe is so big it almost makes you wonder whether we're the only ones actually living in it. When you're having a tough moment, try to look up at the sky and ask yourself if the thing that's bothering you now, will still be a thing in a week or in two weeks. If the answer is no, you should try to stop worrying about it so much. We know that might not be easy, but just try.

Tyson said: “There are more stars in the universe than grains of sand on any beach, more stars than seconds have passed since Earth formed, more stars than words and sounds ever uttered by all the humans who ever lived.” Just something to remember when you feel consumed by your negative thoughts.

4. Laugh

When feeling down we suggest you just start laughing like crazy. And we mean really force yourself to laugh out loud. After a while you'll be actually laughing your ass off. Laughing or smiling has proven to affect your feelings positively. You'll be instantly in a better mood. Plus, it even burns calories, win-win right?

5. Get a massage

Besides the fact that it feels absolutely amazing to have your body molded and massaged, it also benefits your soul and mind. It reduces stress and for a while you won't be able to think about the hustle and bustle of your life. Your mind is one with the hands of the masseur. After a massage we always feel like a newborn baby, both physically and mentally.

6. Volunteer

Giving back is great for feeding your soul. Our busy lives make us sometimes forget that there are people out there who are less fortunate than we are. Doing something for others without expecting something in return gives you a real energy boost. Whether it's volunteering at an animal shelter, a homeless shelter or just doing groceries for your neighbour. You'll feel amazing after.

7. Lose yourself in a book

Have you ever read a book that you were so into and you completely lost track of time? That you didn't even know where you were anymore? That little escape from reality is amazing for getting some peace of mind. You disappear from the world for a moment and only you and the characters in your book exist. It's really refreshing for your soul. So take a trip to your local library and start browsing.

8. Puppy play time

Playing with little furry friends has been proven to lower your blood pressure and stress levels. Laura T. Coffey, author of My Old Dog: Rescued Pets with Remarkable Second Acts, believes that older dogs optimize the benefit. “Senior dogs tend to be calm, mellow, sweet and lovable, and they’re so happy to be with you. This, of course, is good for the soul — and the ego. Time spent with an older dog is divine!”. And on top of that, it's also just really fun to spend time with animals.

9. Check out new scenery

When looking for things to do, expand your scope a little by going places you wouldn't normally go to. For instance, visit a museum in another town or go to a park you've never been before. Nothing inspires us more than going places we've never been before. Got the feeling you've been living on autopilot? A new scene triggers the senses and wakes you up like nothing else. You'll have to pay attention to the things around you and be really present in the moment.

10. Listen to your favourite tunes

Nothing beats putting on your favourite music and singing along as loud as you can. It comforts you and makes you happy. Or even just listening to the music is an instant mood booster. Feeling down? Just listen to music and your negative thoughts will disappear like they were never even there in the first place.
